AIVAS' plan worked. Thread was gone.
For a few hundred years, Perns was allowed to prosper. Dragons and humans lived in harmony. The dragonriders were heroes, and nothing would change that in the minds of the people. It seemed that the dragons understood science as well as any human. Although technology didn't advance, medicine did. With each disease came a cure, and soon it seemed the whole of Pern was innoculated against everything.
Until It happened.
A super virus, one that no medicine could cure. It struck only the dragons at first. One by one they all just lay down to sleep. Lay down to sleep and never woke up. Oh they still breathed, but they couldn't communicate with their riders, through thought or emotion. The couldn't move, and they were only vaguely aware of what was happening to them. Being constantly asleep meant they didn't eat, and eventually the dragons started to die of starvation.
Then the virus struck humans.
The first victim was a 12 turn old boy named Liol. His death gave the disease its name - Liol disease. Fifty more Turns passed, and only a few hundred dragons were free of the disease. Humans of course, were still in their tens of thousands. The as yet disease free dragons moved to different Weyrs far away from the diseased. There they tried to work on a cure. So busy they were, in their work, that no one noticed the return of the Red Star.
The cure came in the form of an ancient enemy.
Thread came, both a curse and a blessing. The ashes of Thread cured the diseased, but the dragons, having missed out Thread fighting from their training, were severely low in numbers. Those who survived clustered into one Weyr, and called in Fairhaven. The mountains that surrounded the Weyr were full of caves which suited to shelter the Fairhaveners from Thread. Dragons learned to fight again, and the rest of the turn passed with fewer casualties.
But then trouble came in the form of a child.
A couple, both of whom had been ill with Liol disease, welcomed a child into their family. But there was something wrong with the child. It had grey skin. Grey skin, black hair and black Irises. The babe was healthy enough, save for the odd colouration, and at first, no one thought anything of it. Until another was born. And another. The parents of these children had all been ill with Liol disease, and had all Inhaled the Ashes of Thread in large quantities to get better. The children were soon hated, lower in ranking then even a drudge.
They called us, the Thread-Born.
The Thread-Born lived troubled lives. Around Pern there were several hundred in total. At Fairhaven, twelve of the grey humans existed. They weren't allowed to stand for candidacy, and many dragonriders worried that the dragon babies would have a similar ailement. They didn't, at least not in colouration.
For the first time since the creation of the dragons, a bronze went Wild.
The bronze had been a large baby anyway, but no one arund suited his personality. The dragon baby, unImpressed, had his fill from the Weyrling's meat bucket. Instead of Betweening like he should, the little bronze left the Weyr running, able to talk, but not giving his name for the records. The fact he survived not Impressing has worried riders, and some Holders are beginning to wonder if the rumour that dragons can't hurt humans after Impression is even true.
It's been a long time since those events. Two hundred and fifty years in fact. No more dragons have gone Wild, but the Thread-Born continue to grow in number, and are still seen as parasites. Some humans are sympathetic, and a Thread-Born has been selected to Stand as a Candidate. No one knows what will happen if they Impress...
